What is GST?
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a unified indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services across India. It replaced a complex system of multiple taxes including VAT, service tax, excise duty, and octroi. GST was introduced on 1st July 2017 and is governed by the GST Council.
Types of GST in India
CGST — Central GST
Collected by the Central Government on intra-state sales (within the same state).
SGST — State GST
Collected by the State Government on intra-state sales. Both CGST and SGST are charged at equal rates.
IGST — Integrated GST
Charged on inter-state sales (between two different states). Collected by the Central Government.
GST Slabs in India
| GST Rate | Examples | |----------|---------| | 0% | Essential food items, books, newspapers | | 5% | Packaged food, medicines, transport | | 12% | Computers, processed food, business class air tickets | | 18% | Most services, electronics, restaurants | | 28% | Luxury goods, automobiles, tobacco |
How to Calculate GST
Adding GST to a price:
GST Amount = Original Price x GST Rate / 100
Example: Rs 1,000 product with 18% GST
- GST = Rs 180
- Total = Rs 1,180
Removing GST from an inclusive price:
Original Price = Inclusive Price x 100 / (100 + GST Rate)
Example: Rs 1,180 inclusive of 18% GST
- Original = Rs 1,000
- GST = Rs 180
CGST and SGST Split
For intra-state transactions, GST is split equally:
- 18% GST = 9% CGST + 9% SGST
- 12% GST = 6% CGST + 6% SGST
- 5% GST = 2.5% CGST + 2.5% SGST

GST Registration Threshold
Businesses with annual turnover above Rs 40 lakhs must register for GST. Once registered, they must file monthly or quarterly returns.
Input Tax Credit
One of the biggest benefits of GST is Input Tax Credit. Businesses can claim credit for GST paid on purchases and offset it against GST collected on sales. This eliminates the cascading effect of taxes.
